A winter tyre or snow tyre is specifically designed for winter conditions like snow and ice. They are used as an alternative to snow chains. These types of tyres have tread patterns designed to dig down and bite into snow and ice. The reason they retain their flexibility in extreme cold is due to the fact that they are made from softer rubber compounds. This helps in allowing the tyres to conform better to the roads. There are even snow tyres that are designed to throw snow away and keep the surface of the tread clean. This helps in maintaining traction and handling of the vehicle. They also have a tougher bead construction.

Summer tyres do not last longer than snow tyres. They last just as long and are better performers during winter season. They last for 2 to 3 winters depending on the mileage. This helps in saving wear and tear on summer tyres , thus postponing their replacement. In summer, snow tyres are much noisier and since they are made of softer compounds, they tend to wear out faster. It is recommended to leave snow tyres on as long as there is snow still falling.

Snow tyres are not just for winter. They can also be used on slush, ice, frost and even wet roads. It is recommended for them to be used any time the temperature drops below 7 degrees Centigrade. Modern winter tyres are also very comfortable. Sometimes they are more comfortable than summer tyres due to an increased profile.

While trying to decide on what type of tyre (in finnish rengas) to buy, there are three factors one must remember. These are (1) Traction (2) Puncture Resistance (3) Width.

Rubber compound has a great effect on how much traction a tyre will offer. Tread pattern also plays a role in this. A very good rubber with no tread will be more effective than a poor compound with a deep tread. There is a chance that the chunky tread will reduce the rolling efficiency of the tyre.

As the puncture resistance increases, so does the rolling resistance. If the tyres are stiffened with rubber on the sidewalls and toughened carcasses, it is harder to deform as it passes through rough roads.

The larger dimensions of tyres offer a larger contact patch which gives more grip.

It is important to choose the right winter tyre (in finnish talvirengas) for your vehicle as it is a matter of your safety as well as others.
